Leonid Sigal, violin
Andrius Žlabys, piano
Aekyung Kim, viola
Peter Zay, cello
Program:
Prokofiev – Violin Sonata no. 1 in f minor, Op. 80
Faure – Piano Quartet No. 1 in c minor, Op. 15
It was such a joy getting to hear live music again. Leonid Sigal is a spectacular violinist who has served as Concertmaster of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra for many years.
The program was beautifully curated by Mr. Sigal. The Prokofiev provided a stunning contrast to the Faure on this concert. Mr. Sigal explained that a part of the Prokofiev is meant to represent the wind over a graveyard. It is fascinating how differently Faure used scales in his Quartet to achieve the opposite emotion of joy.
Mr. Sigal played with all of the passion and musicality possible to bring to each work. Andrius Žlabys is a remarkable pianist, and collaborated with such grace with Mr. Sigal. The colors and phrasing both musicians played with was breathtaking.
Aekyung Kim and Peter Zay, both musicians with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, brought lots of energy and musical life to the Faure. The pizzicato playing in the second movement was really excellent in terms of style. The fourth movement was unbelievably thrilling and engaging! This brilliant and optimistic music resembled the current feeling of the return of live music!
